Young Writers impress in London Square Competition marking International Literacy Day

Chigwell Village, Orpington

On International Literacy Day, London Square celebrated young writers in Chigwell and Orpington by hosting a writing competition for local students.

Patrick Scowen, age 8,  of Darrick Wood Junior School, Orpington, won first prize for his story “Jake The Giant” and was presented with a Kindle by author Jennifer Killick, who also conducted a book reading of her story “Alex Sparrow and the Furry Fury” for guests at the prizegiving in the London Square Orpington marketing suite.

As well as winning a Kindle, Patrick’s story was printed and published by London Square, with copies going to the local library and his school.

I was so excited to win – it was a really great day! I enjoyed writing my story and meeting the author Jennifer – I found it really interesting and would like to keep writing.

Meanwhile, in Chigwell, which has a long history with famous literary icons, with Charles Dickens calling the area “the finest place on earth”, Hannah Javed, age 10,  won with her story “The Mysteries Of The Forest”. Local author Lorraine Gregory, who read from her story “Mold and the Poison Plot”, presented Hannah with her Kindle and published story.

I was so happy to win the competition. I really enjoy writing, so it was really great for other people to like my story. It was lovely to meet Lorraine Gregory the author and learn what inspired her to become a writer.
