How to Feng Shui your Christmas

14 Dec 22

Tree decorating, gift wrapping and dinner hosting, Christmas can often be a stressful time for new homeowners. However, ‘tis the season of greetings and cheer, even more so if you're celebrating your first Christmas in your new property. So, take advantage of the festive season and charge your home with joyful energy, or in feng shui terms, "Chi".

The Basics

Leading feng shui expert, Ellen Whitehurst, explains you should "Decorate up" by hanging garlands and lights so that they "smile". Decorations with ends that "hang down" can create a subconscious sadness. Top tip: try decorating at eye level to "lift" the mood of a room and those in it.

Turn off your overhead lighting and opt for a variety of light sources. Overhead lights can deplete energy resulting in an anxious mood. Use holiday candles and side lamps to create a sense of calm (and also save money on energy bills).

Think green. In feng shui, green is the colour of healing – it can relieve and diffuse stress while creating a peaceful environment. Green balances the 'fire and heat' brought by an excess of red. To incorporate green, decorate with pine or evergreen branches, and consider hanging some over your entryway outside to ward off negative energies and invite fortune and luck.

The Five-Element Theory

Probably the most important Christmas decision a homeowner must make is the age old: ‘Where do I place the Christmas tree?’ You can narrow your perfect tree placement choices by considering the feng shui five-element theory. According to this theory, the perfect placement is in your home's wealth, fame or family area. The wealth area is the room in the upper left-hand corner of your home. The fame area is located across from your front door. Triangular shapes displayed in these areas enhance finances, abundance and prosperity. The family area is on the left-hand side of your home.

Sense of Scent

Finally, fill your home with appealing scents and fragrances to decorate your house for Christmas, following feng shui rules. Use scented candles and essential oils to create a cosy atmosphere. Lavender, cinnamon, lemon or geranium are excellent for boosting positive energy.

Now, sit back and relax, enjoying the positive and peaceful atmosphere your Feng Shui Christmas style has created.
