Jay&Co, the furniture restoration and upcycling workshop run by Jay Blades, has brought together young talented makers for a pop-up showcase in the beautifully restored and refurbished former Branston Pickle Factory in Bermondsey.
The residency will run from Friday 15th March to Sunday 17th March from
12 noon to 7pm, with the launch of the latest collection of bespoke restored and contemporary furniture and makers from Jay&Co, alongside interiors-related pieces produced by emerging talented artisans and craftspeople.
The setting is the stunning industrial chic commercial space at The Pickle Factory, SE1, which has been restored and converted by award-winning developer London Square - partnering with Jay&Co to stage the pop-up.
At Jay&Co, restorer and TV presenter Jay Blades and his team re-use, restore, upcycle and re-imagine materials, furniture and accessories, producing striking, sustainable pieces.
Other makers taking part include an embroidery textile virtuoso, a decorative marquetry artist, bespoke furniture makers, and an upholstery and restoration expert.
Jay Blades, who is an ambassador for the King’s Foundation for heritage crafts, said: “Jay&Co runs as a co-operative to support emerging talent among artisans and craftspeople. Our pop up is an opportunity to see the flair and depth of knowledge of these exciting makers. This is a showcase for some extraordinary work.”
Adam Lawrence, Founder and Chief Executive, London Square, said: “The Pickle Factory is the ideal setting for Jay&Co’s pop up showcase. The building exemplifies the ethos of re-use, restore and reimagine. We rescued the building from dereliction, providing homes and stunning commercial space while remaining faithful to its industrial heritage. We are delighted to be partnering with Jay&Co and its work in promoting makers and craftsmanship.”
A series of maker demonstrations will take place over the four days. Jay&Co will reveal how they transform furniture with their upholsterer Vlad Nemes, who works in Jay&Co’s Shropshire workshop. Amber Joy trained as a furniture restorer and conservationist and is now a surface design artist and expert in marquetry, producing commissions for cultural and heritage sites. She will be demonstrating her exquisite marquetry skills. Palvinder Nangla is an embroidery textile artist, who learnt embroidery from his grandmother at a very young age. He will be showing how his skills at embellishing produce detailed and imaginative pieces. Woodworkers Daisy and Andrew from Lula James Woodworking Creative will reveal their approach to bespoke pieces of furniture, which they produce at their Oxford studios.
On Sunday 17th March, a panel discussion will take place on Crafting Creativity into a Business, chaired by Jade Ilke, of Designing Futures, with Daisy Lula Brunsdon from Lula James and Amber Joy, with design entrepreneur Piers Roberts, who has organised design and architecture festivals in London, Milan, Tokyo and Seoul.
