On Tuesday 3 May, award winning developer London Square hosted students from Old Vicarage School, at the landmark Star and Garter development on Richmond Hill, for a competition to recreate Turner’s famous painting, which immortalised the view in 1820. 27 girls from Year 4 spent the morning at The Star and Garter, taking pictures and making sketches of the view - which can be enjoyed from the development’s expansive terrace area. The view from Richmond Hill is considered so beautiful that it is the only view in England to be protected by an Act of Parliament. The students were joined by local artist Anna Tikhomirova, who offered expert tips and advice on how best to create a modern day interpretation of this famous scene. Anna is a traditionally trained artist who lives in Chiswick and paints scenes of leafy London suburbia, drawing inspiration from the Thames, people, animals, trees and delicate plays of lights and darks. She paints in oil, gouache and watercolour, and is an active art tutor who is committed to watching students grow in skills and experience. As part of the morning, the students were also given a tour of this landmark restoration project, which is being transformed by London Square to provide 86 architecturally stunning apartments and duplexes. The girls will now complete their paintings at school, with a 'pop up' exhibition and prize giving ceremony to be organised in the coming months.
