Business achieves highest ‘Gold’ ranking for second year
London Square, a specialist property company focussed on mixed-use, multi tenure places in London, has been risen from fourth to second place in the Next Generation sustainability benchmark.
The Next Generation benchmark is the leading ESG assessment for the UK residential real estate sector. It rigorously evaluates companies on a comprehensive range of criteria, including sustainability strategy, governance, stakeholder engagement, environmental performance, and social impact across development and operational activities. The criteria are updated on a three-year cycle to ensure they remain relevant and ambitious and drive continuous improvement in the industry.
The 2025 results reflect both London Square’s continued progress and the increasing ambition across the sector, as organisations work to deliver more sustainable housing, stronger outcomes for communities and working environments that support employees and a resilient supply chain.
Adam Lawrence, CEO, London Square, commented: “We’re delighted to improve our position in the Next Generation benchmark in a year when the criteria were tightened, challenging the industry to go beyond the latest regulatory standards. Delivering sustainable places is a continual journey, and this recognition reflects the steps we’ve taken to drive performance across all aspects of our business.
“The improvement in our ranking is a powerful motivation to continue innovating to deliver sustainable communities the benefit people and London long into the future.”
Across 2025, London Square made significant progress in key areas of its sustainability strategy, including waste and carbon reductions, and improving data accuracy by reducing reliance on benchmark data. Construction also began on the company’s first net zero carbon in operation homes at Twickenham Square.
These initiatives form part of a broader, long-term strategy to embed sustainability into every stage of the property lifecycle, from design and construction to asset management, supporting the transition to low-carbon, resilient housing across the capital.
What is the Next Generation benchmark?
The Next Generation benchmark is an annual sustainability assessment of UK residential property companies, designed to improve transparency, accountability, and performance across the sector. It provides a robust framework for measuring how organisations deliver environmental sustainability, social value, and strong governance in the built environment.
The criteria cover: company strategy & governance, reporting, future proofing, environmental site management, design standards, ecology, energy & carbon, water, circular economy, transport, procurement, health & safety, community & customer engagement, design & placemaking, and economic development.
